Helmet and Shield
Spain. Calatayud (?). Circa 1480/90
Steel and copper; engraved, polished and gilded.
Source of Entry:   Tsarskoe Selo Arsenal. 1885

A helmet and large round shield forged from steel - these are very rare examples of surviving Spanish defensive weaponry of the late 15th century. They were intended for practical use in battle, and in this case their rich decoration indicates not their ceremonial function but that they belonged to a person of high rank. It is hard to say if they were used separately or whether they formed part of a set of full armour.

In the decoration of both pieces we should note the skilful combination of polished steel and copper, gilded and decorated with fine engraved bands and attachments which create a very attractive effect. The ornamentation makes notable use of oriental motifs, while the Latin inscription on the helmet - Domine Mei Memento - was typical in the decoration of European arms and armour of this early period.
